  Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure
Average Blood Pulse Rates
Adult Males     About 72    Beet per minute
Adult Females 76 to 80      Beet per minute
Newborns         Up to 140   Beet per minute
Children            About 90    Beet per minute
Elderly               50 to 65      Beet per minute

A person's blood pulse is the arterial palpation of a heartbeat. It can be felt in any place that allows for an artery to be compressed against a bone, such as at the neck , at the wrist radial artery, behind the knee, on the inside of the elbow, and near the ankle joint. The blood pulse rate can also be measured by measuring the heart beat directly auscultation usually using a stethoscope.

The blood pulse is a decidedly low tech/high yield and antiquated term still useful at the bedside in an age of computational analysis of cardiac performance. Claudius Galen  was perhaps the first physiologist to describe the blood pulse. The blood pulse is an expedient tactile method of determination of systolic blood pressure to a trained observer.

The heart rate can be much higher than the pulse rate depending upon the cause or etiology. In this case, the heart rate is determined by auscultation of the heart apex, in which case it is not the blood pulse. The blood pulse deficit difference between heart beats and pulsations at the periphery is determined by simultaneous palpation at the radial artery and auscultation at the heart apex.

The rate of the blood pulse is observed and measured by tactile or visual means on the outside of an artery and is recorded as beats per minute or beats per minute. A normal blood pulse rate for a healthy adult, while resting, can range from 60 to 100 beats per minute which means that your heart is slowed down because you aren't doing an activity that is getting your heart rate up, although well-conditioned athletes may have a healthy blood pulse rate much lower than 60 beats per minute say 30-45 beet per minute. During sleep, the blood pulse can drop to as low as 40 BPM; during strenuous exercise, it can rise as high as 150–200 beet per minute. Generally, blood pulse rates are higher in infants and young children. The resting heart rate for an infant is usually close to an adult's blood pulse rate during strenuous exercise average 110 beats per minute for an baby.

Common Pulse Areas

Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure Upper limb
 F
ront of right upper extremity Axillary pulse: located inferiorly of the lateral wall of the axilla Brachial pulse: located on the inside of the upper arm near the elbow, frequently used in place of carotid pulse in infants brachial artery
Radial pulse: located on the lateral of the wrist radial artery. It can also be found in the anatomical snuff box. Ulnar pulse: located on the medial of the wrist ulnar artery.

Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure Lower limb
Femoral pulse: located in the thigh, halfway between the pubic symphysis and anterior superior iliac spine femoral artery. Popliteal pulse: Above the knee in the popliteal nasal, found by holding the bent knee. The patient bends the knee at approximately 124°, and the physician holds it in both hands to find the popliteal artery in the pit behind the knee Popliteal artery.
Dorsalis pedis pulse: located on top of the foot dorsalis pedis artery.
Tibialis posterior pulse: located on the medial side of the ankle around medial malleolus posterior tibial artery.

Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure Head/neck

Arteries of the neck. Carotid pulse: located in the neck carotid artery. The carotid artery should be palpated gently and while the patient is sitting or lying down. Stimulating its bar receptors with low palpitation can provoke severe bradycardia or even stop the heart in some sensitive persons. Also, a person's two carotid arteries should not be palpated at the same time. Doing so may limit the flow of blood to the head, possibly leading to fainting or brain ischemia. It can be felt between the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, above the hyoid bone and lateral to the thyroid cartilage. Facial pulse: located on the mandible lower jawbone on a line with the corners of the mouth facial artery. Temporal pulse: located on the temple directly in front of the ear superficial temporal artery.

Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure Torso
Apical pulse: located in the 4.5th or 5th left intercostals space, just to the left of the sternum. In contrast with other pulse sites, the apical pulse site is unilateral, and measured not under an artery, but below the heart itself more specifically, the apex of the heart.

Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure Instrument

Blood pressure pulse is taken using an instrument called a sphygmomanometer which consists of a cuff that can be filled with air, a hollow rubber bulb that pumps the air, and a glass tube containing a column of mercury. After placing the cuff around the upper arm, the doctor holds a stethoscope over the artery just below the cuff. The pulse can be heard. Next, air is pumped into the cuff, stopping the flow of blood through the artery. Then, air is slowly let out of the cuff, letting the blood flow again. The pressure with which the blood begins to flow represents the pressure of the heart's contraction known as the systolic phase. More air is let out of the cuff, muffling the sound, and representing the pressure of the heart's relaxation known as the diastolic phase.

Am I am able to drink a few beers while taking toprol for blood pressure regulation and fluttering heart?

I have been taking toprol xl for about 6 months now for slightly elevated blood pressure and the occasional heart flutter. My cardiologist said my heart was fine – they did all the test including treadmill, sonogram of my heart etc. He said everything was great, but that I needed to lose weight to get my blood pressure down. So I have, I have dropped 8 pounds in the last month and am steadily going. But tonight I want to have a few beers with a friend to celebrate his birthday and want to make sure I’m not going to kill over and end up on one of those news specials for some dangerous drug interactions. I have been reading on the internet and most of what I have found said that it could increase drowsiness and I shouldn’t operate cars etc – but one place said it could decrease the medications affect – so.. any thoughts?
I take my toprol at night, in fact it was about an hour and a half ago. I went ahead and had one light beer and cut at that. I can’t say that I feel it is interacting – but it’s not worth taking the risk. Thanks to all for the advice.

Naturally Lower High Blood Pressure- Lower Hbp, Increase Sex Drive, and Lose Weight

Posted on : 01-09-2010 | By : Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure | In : High Blood Pressure

Isn’t there some cliché that states, “All good things come in threes’? I never really thought of this until one late-night channel surf brought me to a show called ‘The Truth about Food’ on the Discovery Channel. The six part series discusses how food can help improve your overall health. And more specifically, how food can naturally lower high blood pressure, increase your sex drive and help you lose weight!

Imagine not having to worry about hypertension anymore. Imagine going to bed feeling about 20 years younger. Imagine taking a few extra seconds to check yourself out in front of the mirror.

Stop imagining and listen to this!

How Your Diet is EVERYTHING!

Whoever coined the phrase, “You are what you eat”? I have always thought this phrase was kind of corny but I might have to reconsider. Let me explain!

As I watched the show ‘The Truth about Food’, I began to feel a little guilty about my diet! After all, I have devoted my career to the natural health field so you would expect that I would have great health! And I do! But, I have never truly grasped how much your diet does affect your general health; until I met the high blood pressure television participants.

On the show ‘The Truth about Food’, the hypertension participants spent about 2 weeks at a zoo and were challenged to eat like an ape. As you can imagine, the only foods allowed to each participant were fresh, raw fruits and vegetables (ape food). Besides being regular (the comic relief of the show), the contestants also reduced high blood pressure, reduced cholesterol levels, lost weight and transformed their self-image of themselves.

The high-fiber study showed:

High blood pressure levels dropped a whopping 10%.

Cholesterol levels plummeted an astonishing 25%.

Participants lost an average of 10 pounds in two weeks.

But What About You?

I immediately re-read my High Blood Pressure Remedy Report and was re-convinced that everyone can naturally lower high blood pressure with about 5 simple steps! I questioned, how many points would the participants have dropped if they supplemented their high fiber diet (raw fruits and vegetables) with the correct vitamins, minerals and supplements.

Unfortunately, most people do NOT realize this and are becoming completely reliant upon over-priced, side-effect laden pills that run on the same concept as a piece of fruit!

Do you want to know what natural vitamins and minerals will lower High Blood Pressure in days?

Do you want to know why you should go nuts for nuts?

Do you want to know why you should know the truth about salt?

Do you want to know what foods are essential? What foods should be tossed?

And finally, do you want to know how we can guarantee that you will lower high blood pressure naturally? Consider lowering you HBP, increasing your sex drive, and losing weight this week! Please take a moment and visit our website and our guarantee!

How accurate are those automatic blood pressure monitors with the arm cuff?

Posted on : 30-08-2010 | By : Blood Pulse - Blood Pressure | In : Blood Pressure Monitors

The brand is ReliOn and I bought it at the store for a little over $50.
My readings are normal with this machine (always below 120 systolic and 85 diastolic), but when I’ve used one of those blood pressure machines at Wal-Mart – the one where you sit down – the numbers are a lot higher, especially when I have to roll up my sleeve tight.
The one I have is a ReliOn automatic blood pressure monitor with easy wrap cuff. I’ve looked at reviews on the computer and it seems as if Consumer Reports is real high on this product.
